Photography is about noticing the world around you, the light, the shade, and the little details.
My photography is driven mainly by curiosity and exploration, a walk in a neighbourhood I haven't visited before or revisiting the same places repeatedly to see what I missed or what has changed. There is always something interesting to find down a random side street or following some distant sound.
The purpose of my exploration is to gain a better understanding of the place and space I am in at the time, engaging with the people there. In walking with a camera in hand I have found I am more tuned in to what I am experiencing, examining closer the details and looking with a more inquisitive nature at what may be a mundane or ordinary scene. It is this view of the world that I seek to bring out in my photographs.
My work consists of both film and digital photography. For my film photography I use 35mm, medium format, and 4x5 large format depending on what I am looking to achieve with the image. I personally develop all my rolls of film and my black and white prints are made using an enlarger.
Originally from New Zealand I have lived in the United Kingdom for the last 20 years. For the majority of the year I am based in the United Kingdom, and try to spend a couple of months a year on the island of Java in Indonesia.
